Case studies
Here’s a list of projects I’ve been working on. Most of the work demonstrates proficiency in authoring Actionscript 3 using OOP and design pattern methodology. There are also examples of design, illustration and animation I have produced over the years.
So what you been up to?
rbidr
I am currently working as a consultant with a startup company called ‘rbidr’. As well as User-Experience, Usability and digital strategy I’ve also been getting my hands dirty building flex themes and demos.
Gucci
Critical Mass asked me to help them build a Microsite engine for Gucci to showcase their range of fragrances. I built them a framework using Flex that allowed them to fully customise the look and feel with skins and themes . The site is now finally live here.
RedBox
I helped build a site for RedBox Media for a product called Balance. The site was to be deployed on company intranets to help employees monitor their alcohol intake.
Animation for Grey Advertising
I recently completed a video compositing job for Grey Advertising using After Effects. I’m really pleased with the results and it was great to work with beautiful assets and pleasant people.
Code
While working with Code I’ve been developing a Flash IDE panel in Flex, authored in AS3 and MXML and utilising the power of JSFL to read the Flash IDE DOM. This research will eventually be the core of a banner development engine to be used by developers creating banner templates that can be manipulated dynamically. This is an exciting piece of work that has seen me researching open-source technologies like SWFMill and MTASC as a method to directly manipulate SWF files to change the content without compromising on weight. More on this work soon. Top secret at the moment.
MTV Best Show Ever website
I spent a couple of weeks helping a small agency called Publicreative develop a website for MTV in Flash. The framework had been developed by Tink and I needed to reverse-engineer it and adapt some of the content; including the section transitions which were dynamically generated PaperVision animations. It also utilized some pretty complicated Deep-Linking and the back-end was done in AMFPHP. Overall, a very interesting project technically with a really great bunch of people over there in SE1.
Weapon 7
Weapon 7 asked me to help them develop an interactive TV emulator in Flash. It needed to be built as a flexible XML-driven engine that would allow their Flash designer to easily update the campaigns they wanted to showcase without having to get their hands dirty with Actionscript. The resulting application is now complete but I am still awaiting the go-ahead to publish the results here. Again, a walk-through of the project is available on request.
Six & Co
Six&Co asked me to save their Vicks.co.uk project after their lead developer on the project had to leave suddenly. I had little time to reverse-engineer the project and bolt it all back together. The result is a slick marketing site with an unusual navigation.
Tribal DBB
The Philips Floorcare microsite was built to be a flexible engine for global markets to customise with their own products in their own language. This was engineered in Eclipse and uses the fantastic Fuse animation kit.
Romilly Photography
This Microsite combines an XML based CMS and an easily skinnable interface via CSS. The result is a slick photography portfolio site that takes advantage of Flash’s Stage class to completely take over the browser window for maximum effect.
UEFA 2008 Performance Index Microsite
Authored in AS2 using an MVC design pattern this Microsite displays data feeds from UEFA within a rich interface. This is phase 1 of a larger project that will coincide with the European Football championships in 2008.
American Express – Rolling Stones Microsite
American Express commissioned this Microsite to coincide with their promotion of the massive Rolling Stones world tour in 2007. The site was developed in Actionscript, utilising XML and CSS to create multiple instances of the site.
American Express – Global Gateway
Again, using Actionscript, XML and CSS this Flash Microsite was deployed as an immersive, rich, global portal for all of the American Express worldwide services.
American Express – Winback microsite
American Express wanted a quirky interactive piece of marketing to win back old customers. All the animation in this piece is dynamically generated using the Fuse animation engine and XML.
American Express – Security module
Reusable, XML-driven module for dynamically deploying headers in the AmEx security pages.
BBC – How to be a gardener website
Designed and built Flash modules on this BAFTA award winning website for the BBC’s Factual & Learning department. Highly enjoyable project that took around 6 months. You can view the majority of the Flash work within the interactive section. Incidentally I also illustrated & animated the assets.
BBC – Skid Squirrel game for CBBC
This platform game was created from scratch and I also did the illustration & animation.
Fit2Go – Digital Curriculum game
This game was developed for the ill-fated BBC Jam (digital curriculum) project and has incidentally, never gone live. You’ll need to download the ZIP, expand and run the EXE as this doesn’t work outside of the BBC’s SCORM player.
Cisco – 3D cube
This was a click-through from an email campaign that involved creating a dynamically generated 3D cube that the user interacts with.
IBM – Pacman banner
IBM fancied the idea of having a full working version of Pacman in a banner. The artificial intelligence involved to create Pacman from scratch was quite a challenge.
Atradius News
Atradius Connect
These two microsites were created using a custom built ‘microsite engine’ that allowed the client to quickly and easily add content for multiple markets.
Colin Bell Photography
Portfolio website for Colin Bell, a very talented photographer of the rich and famous.
RAF4U – Drop Zone
Royal Institute – Bio Bob’s Biodiversity game
Royal Institute – Planet X
Royal Institute – The Cell Cycle
DirectGov – Tiddler
DirectGov – Junk Busters
A selection of games I developed while working at Cimex media. Cimex specialised in e-learning so the clients include DirectGov and The Royal Institute. I did all of the authoring on these games and the illustration/animation on the ‘Tiddler’ game.
Rodale Intro
An example of some animation work. this was a Flash animated intro as a marketing piece for a large publishing house.
